A number of students and members of staff have received texts that look like they are from MyGov or the Australian Tax Office (ATO) but are from scammers trying to get money or information.
The most important thing to remember is not to click on links from these text messages.
Scammers also operate through social media, phone calls and emails.
The ATO or MyGov will also not call you to say you owe money and will go to prison if you don’t pay, they won’t ask for your bank details and they won’t demand you send them gift cards as payment. They will also not ask you to click on a link to find other services.
You can call the ATO on 1800 008 540.
You can click on the link above the image in this story for the PDF Scams Easy Read from the ATO with lots of information on avoiding scammers.
In your MyGov account you will find a section on recognising scams.
